MATTHEW EDWARD PEANORT, SR.

8 May 1922 - 17 Nov 1999 (aged 77)

PORTSMOUTH — Matthew Edward Peanort Sr. died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Maryview Hospital.

Mr. Peanort was born in Florence, S.C. He retired as yardmaster after 33 years of service with Norfolk-Western Railway Company. He also worked as a railway express handler with Atlantic Coast Line Railway Company; at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Shop No. 38; a former real estate agent; and a notary public.

He was a member of Zion Baptist Church, Portsmouth, for over 50 years. He served as past president of the Trustee Board, past president of the Men of Zion, and a member of Lott Carey Laymen League.

Mr. Peanort was a member an organizer and former secretary-treasurer of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen; former member of Unions Negotiation Team; former member of I.L.A. Longshoreman Local No. 1248; member and former secretary-treasurer of Brighton Rock Masonic Lodge No. 133, Order of Masons; member of Alpha and Omega Consistory No. 9; member of Truxton Chapter No. 34, Royal Arch; member of Antioch Commanders No. 7, Knights of Templar; former board member of Arabia Temple No. 12 and former chairman of the Building Fund; member of Alchis, Portsmouth; an organizer, past president and secretary of the National Anthropos; organizer and former president of Eastern Regional Anthropos.

 

He was also a member of Eureka Club Inc.; Sahibs and Associates; life member of NAACP; member and former business manager of Olympian Sports Club; member of Wilson Ward Civic League; former member of Board of Directors of Norfolk Community Hospital; former member of the Board for Community Trust Bank and Crestar Bank; served on Portsmouth Draft Board as member and chairman; served on Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC); served on Portsmouth Douglas Park Parents/Teachers Association; served as member and volunteer of the Salvation Army; served as member and member of Board of Directors of the Portsmouth- Chesapeake Unit of American Cancer Society; and a member of the Portsmouth Museums Family.

Mr. Peanort was preceded in death by his wife, Erline K. Peanort. He is survived by two daughters, Marie P. Whitaker and her husband, Arthur Whitaker III, of Adelphi, Md., and Geneva P. Fennell and her husband, Carl D . Fennell, of Dover, Del.; one son, Matthew E. Peanort Jr. of Hampton; six grandchildren, Angela M. Whitaker, Dr. Troy V. Fennell, Matthew E. Peanort III, Brett J. Fennell, Darius K. Fennell and Marcus E. Peanort; one great- grandchild, Cevante Whitaker-Gray; one niece, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and a host of other relatives, and friends.

Final resting place is the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum, Portsmouth, VA
